ACTIVTIY 1 - ENGAGING IN ARTActivity to be completed before viewing the Exhibition
- View the YouTube video 'Art' as a class. - Talk about the lyrics of the song. - Class discussion - "What is art?" - "Why do people do art? what are they trying to do?" - Discuss how art tells a story, how it conveys a message and why it is so significant in education (teacher refer to resource at the bottom of this page) |

ACTIvITY 2 - 'MAKE THE FACE TELL THE STORYMaterials/resources
- Paint - Brushes - Paper (12x18) - Water source - Paper towels - Paint smocks - Drying racks - Table covered in newspaper - Examples of paintings that express emotion (see exhitibiton page) |
Activities to completed while viewing the Exhibition
Day one - Lead discussion about how features (eyes, eyebrows, eyelids, and cheek/mouth area) change as expression changes. - Recall and review images from the exhibition page of this site as well as observing any other examples such as posters in room. Have students choose the emotion they wish to portray. - Students use pencil to lightly sketch a face with the chosen expression on their papers. Encourage large drawings which will fill the page to exaggerate the emotion chosen. - Students will print their first and last name on back of paper and turn in. Day two - Distribute papers from the previous day. - Review proper procedure for handling paint, brushes, and cleanup, and putting paint smocks on. - Students choose facial color and paint. - Students continue choosing colors and painting features and background. Encourage neatness, blending of colors in face, and using a contrasting or complementary color for the background. - Students should paint to the edges of their paper, covering all white spaces. - Proper cleanup and storing of paints, brushes, and paintings. Day three - Provide the needed time for painting. - Use smaller brushes to add accents and details. - Proper cleanup and storing of paints, brushes, and paintings. |
ACTIVITY 3 - rESEARCH ASSIGNMENT
Activity to complete after viewing the Exhibition
Issue a research assignment to each of the students. This assignments will be based on one of the emotove artists listed below:
- Pablo Picasso
- Grant Wood
- Marc Chagall
- Francis Bacon
- Roy Lichteristein
They are to explore the background of the artist and analyse three of their artworks that convey some sort of emotion. The assignment should be presented in a research report and handed in along with a poster to match. Each student will present a breif oral presentation of their findings when researching their chosen artist.
